The questions we ask can transform learning.

In this professional development course, you’ll explore how purposeful questioning can transform your art teaching by sparking curiosity, developing critical thinking and helping students become more confident, independent learners. You’ll discover how carefully chosen questions can provide purpose and direction to an entire project, promote richer observation and discussion, and empower students to generate meaningful questions of their own.

Inspired by three influential educational books, this practical course introduces three complementary questioning strategies that can be used throughout the art curriculum. Through classroom examples, case studies and demonstrations, you’ll learn how to:

  • Use Essential Questions to give an art project a clear purpose and encourage deeper thinking.
  • Facilitate rich discussions around artworks using Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS).
  • Implement the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) to help students develop curiosity, ownership and independent learning.

Throughout the course, you’ll see these strategies modelled using art-specific examples, making it easy to adapt them to your own teaching.

You’ll also complete three written tasks that will help you either apply the strategy to projects you already teach or are planning, or experience the strategy from a learner’s perspective.

Included with this course

  • Approximately 30 minutes of video instruction.
  • 3½ hours of professional development, including the accompanying tasks.
  • Downloadable planning sheets and classroom resources.

Once you have watched the professional development, you will be able to download a certificate that includes your name, the name of the course, and the duration. The video is just over 30 minutes long, the duration of the course is 3½ hours to allow you time to complete the tasks within. The duration on the certificate will be 3½ hrs.

Whether you’re an early career teacher or an experienced practitioner, this course will provide you with practical, research-informed strategies that you can begin using immediately to develop curiosity, discussion and deeper thinking in your art lessons.

Texas Educators (CPE): The Arty Teacher is an approved Continuing Professional Education (CPE) provider in Texas. If you wish to claim Texas CPE credit for this course, please read the Texas CPE Information document which is included with the course. This explains the additional requirements for verification, including completion of the written tasks and submission of evidence.

Materials & Equipment Required: Pen and paper, and the downloads that come with this course.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
