Learning Objectives

  • Develop understanding of tints, shades, tones, and muted colours through practical experimentation.

Please note, I have created different versions of the presentation and video with both ‘colour’ and ‘color’ spellings to appeal to teachers from the USA and elsewhere.

The Detail

This lesson encourages students to explore colour theory in a practical and visual way by creating a sketchbook page based around a single hue. Students begin with a pure hue and then experiment by adding white, black, grey, and a complementary colour to create a range of altered colours. Alongside the practical work, students record definitions for both hue and colour, helping to reinforce key terminology through making and reflection.

The included video demonstration guides students step-by-step through the process of creating the page and mixing the colours. This can be used in class with your students or as professional development to help you learn how to teach the activity yourself. Internet access is required to view the video.

The short presentation includes learning objectives and a strong example sketchbook page to support confidence and expectations.

This lesson works particularly well as part of a colour theory project, sketchbook skills unit, or introductory painting course for secondary art students.

Timing Guidance

This colours and hues lesson can be delivered in 1 × 50–60 minute lesson by focusing on one hue and a limited range of colour mixtures, or extended over two lessons by allowing more time for painting, annotation, and colour experimentation.

Materials Required

Paint (I use acrylic), paintbrushes, water pots, palettes or mixing trays, sketchbooks or paper, pencils, black pens, and paper towels or cloths.
