Teach your students about warm and cool colours and how to gradate watercolour with this shells watercolour project.  This project includes:

  • 3 different shells to watercolour.
  • 2 Good examples of shells that have been watercoloured.  One with warm colours, one with cool colours. (Pictured above)
  • A PowerPoint that introduces what warm and cool colours are.  It also introduces the project and includes a link to a video that demonstrates how to gradate watercolour.  There are two versions of the PowerPoint; one with the spelling ‘colour’ and one with the spelling ‘color’.

You can use the video with your students or for your own professional development.  This is a great way to teach your students color theory and how to gradate watercolor.

You can look at the ‘How to Gradate Watercolour‘ on Youtube.

For this project, you will need watercolour, brusheswater pots and palettes*

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
