I Wonder… Creative Art Prompts for Imaginative Writing

‘Stay Safe Mum (Elbow Elbow)’ by Peter Davis reveals so much in its image and title about a certain point in history and its impact on ordinary people.

Rather than formally analysing ‘Stay Safe Mum (Elbow Elbow)‘ this handout asks for a creative response. Each prompt starts ‘I wonder…’ which reinforces the idea that there is no one correct answer. Example statements would be ‘I wonder… what the person is thinking while looking at the screen.’ and ‘I wonder… if she is reading a message and what it says.’

This download includes:

  • A one-page handout with the artwork and writing prompts. Students work on paper or in a sketchbook so these handouts can be used again and again.
  • A one-page ‘teacher notes’ includes information about the artwork.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.

I wanted to develop resources that would help teachers to bring out the best in every student in every class. I also wanted to free-up staff from time-consuming lesson preparation to let them focus instead on delivering exciting, motivating, dynamic lessons, supported by excellent resources.
