Description

African Mask Wax Resist Art Project is a bold and engaging lesson where students explore African mask cultures and create a textual final piece using oil pastel and ink.

Students will:

  • Research traditional African masks and understand how masks are used in different cultures and ceremonies.
  • Experiment with wax resist techniques using oil pastels and ink to create bold contrasts and textures.
  • Explore different ways of making marks, including scratching into oil pastel and adding highlights with white correction or paint pen.
  • Create a final mask artwork that shows cultural inspiration and confident use of materials.

The Detail

This African mask project is a highly engaging way to introduce students to cultural art traditions while developing practical skills in drawing and mixed media. Students begin by researching masks from a chosen African culture, exploring how they are made, what they are used for, and what they look like. This helps students understand that masks are not just decorative objects, but often have important meanings and uses.

Students experiment with wax resist using different coloured oil pastels and inks, exploring colour combinations and the effect of scratching into the oil pastel.

Students then select their favourite mask image to create a final wax resist outcome.

Timing Guidance

This lesson can be delivered in 5 × 50–60 minute to experiment and create the wax resist final outcome.  If the research is to be completed in lessons, I would allow 2 lessons.

Materials Required

Oil pastels, coloured inks, brushes, white correction fluid pens or white paint pens, and cartridge paper. Also, implements to scratch into the oil pastel, such as large needles, a compass or bradels #Ad.

Sarah Crowther – The Arty Teacher

I set up The Arty Teacher because I have a passion for my subject that I want to share with other art teachers around the world.

I have been a high school art teacher for over 20 years, so I understand what it’s like to be in front of a class of students, often with very different abilities and attitudes.
